Christmas Bundt cake with white vanilla glaze, sugared cranberries and rosemary, styled in a festive kitchen with Interior Delights holiday baking accessories.

How to Make Sugared Cranberries

There is something about laying out beautiful Christmas desserts that makes the kitchen feel extra special. The Christmas music is playing, something delicious is in the oven, and suddenly a simple afternoon at home feels like a little holiday tradition. And if there's one thing I love almost as much as decorating my home for Christmas, it's finding a beautiful way to dress up something homemade without spending hours in the kitchen.

Today we're making one of the prettiest little additions to a Christmas dessert: sugared cranberries! These sparkling red berries look like they've been dusted with fresh snow, and they're absolutely gorgeous arranged over any dessert that you can pick up at the bakery or grocery store. Today we're dressing up a simple Bundt cake with white frosting. Cranberries that have been frosted with sugar have that wonderful combination of festive color, natural texture, and old fashioned Christmas charm that I love bringing to the table.

And here's the best part. You only need three ingredients to make the cranberries!

How to Make Sugared Cranberries

Sugared cranberries are fresh cranberries coated in a simple sugar syrup, then rolled in granulated sugar to create a beautiful frosted appearance. They're sweet, tart, and just a little crunchy on the outside. I love how they resemble tiny Christmas ornaments, especially when arranged with a few fresh rosemary sprigs around a holiday cake.

Recipe Details

Prep and active cooking: Approximately 35 minutes

Resting and drying: Approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes

Total time: Approximately 2 hours and 35 minutes

Yield: Approximately 1 cup of sugared cranberries

Ingredients for Sugared Cranberries

  • 1 cup fresh cranberries

  • 3/4 cup water

  • 1 1/4 cups granulated sugar, divided

Step by Step Instructions

  1. Prepare the cranberries. Rinse your fresh cranberries and remove any that are soft or damaged. Place the good cranberries into a medium heatproof bowl. Fresh cranberries work best because frozen berries release too much moisture for the sugar coating to adhere properly.

  2. Make the sugar syrup. Combine 3/4 cup water and 3/4 cup granulated sugar in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir gently until the sugar dissolves and the mixture reaches a light simmer. Remove from the heat and allow it to cool for about five minutes.

  3. Soak the cranberries. Carefully pour the warm sugar syrup over the cranberries and stir until they're completely coated. Cover the bowl and allow the berries to soak for 15 minutes. This gives the cranberries the sticky surface they'll need for their beautiful sugar coating.

  4. Let the cranberries become sticky. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Using a slotted spoon, remove the cranberries from the syrup and spread them into a single layer. Allow them to rest uncovered for approximately one hour. They should feel sticky rather than wet.

  5. Roll in sugar. Place the remaining 1/2 cup granulated sugar into a shallow bowl. Add the sticky cranberries and gently toss until every berry is coated in sparkling white sugar.

  6. Let them dry. Return the coated cranberries to your parchment lined baking sheet, keeping them separated. Allow them to dry uncovered for at least one additional hour until the sugar coating has set.

And just like that, you have the most beautiful little frosted cranberries! They're lovely for garnishing cakes, holiday desserts, and even a festive dessert board.

How to Decorate a Christmas Bundt Cake With Sugared Cranberries

Now comes my favorite part, making something simple look absolutely beautiful! You can use your favorite homemade Bundt cake recipe or even a good quality boxed cake mix. Vanilla, orange, cranberry, gingerbread, and spice cakes all pair beautifully with these festive berries.

The secret is a lovely white frosting or glaze that drapes naturally over the sides of the cake. I especially love a simple vanilla glaze because it creates that snowy Christmas appearance without hiding the beautiful shape of the Bundt cake.

Easy Vanilla Glaze

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar

  • 2 to 3 tablespoons milk or heavy cream

  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Make sure your bundt cake is no longer warm if you baked it, and not frozen if you happened to get it out of the freezer. Put it on a cake stand or tray.

  2. Whisk together the powdered sugar, 2 tablespoons milk, and vanilla until smooth. Add a little more milk as needed until the glaze is thick but pourable.

  3. Slowly spoon the glaze around the top of the cake, allowing it to cascade naturally down the ridges.

  4. Let the glaze set until it is no longer wet before adding your sugared cranberries.

  5. Arrange the cranberries in small clusters around the top of the cake. For an especially festive finish, tuck in a few fresh, washed rosemary sprigs to resemble little evergreen branches. Add the rosemary just before serving.

I love grouping the cranberries rather than placing them in a perfectly spaced circle. A few generous clusters create a more natural, collected look, almost like a little Christmas wreath resting on top of your cake.

Sarah's decorating tip: Wait until shortly before serving to add the sugared cranberries. Moisture from the frosting can gradually dissolve their sparkling sugar coating, and we want them looking beautifully frosted when everyone gathers around the dessert table.

Make Your Christmas Kitchen Part of the Celebration

Of course, half the fun of Christmas baking is making the kitchen feel festive while you're doing it! I'm wearing our Woodland Creatures Apron from Interior Delights, and I just love its sweet woodland design. It's such a charming way to bring a little Christmas personality into an everyday activity, and it would make a thoughtful gift for someone who loves baking during the holidays.

We also have a matching Woodland Creatures Oven Mitt and Pot Holder Set that coordinates beautifully with the apron. I love the idea of giving the two together with a favorite recipe tucked inside a Christmas card.

For something a little more understated, our Dish Towel with Bronze Embroidered Berries is a beautiful addition to a traditional Christmas kitchen. The Dish Towel with White Embroidered Tree is another lovely option if you prefer a softer, neutral holiday look. Simply drape one over your oven handle or fold it neatly beside your serving platter to bring a little seasonal charm to the room.

You don't have to completely redecorate your kitchen for Christmas. Sometimes a beautiful apron, a festive dish towel, and something wonderful baking in the oven are all you need.

And that's what I love about holiday traditions. They don't have to be complicated to feel special. A simple Bundt cake becomes a beautiful Christmas centerpiece with a little white frosting and a handful of sugared cranberries.

I hope you'll try making these for your next Christmas gathering. Whether you're hosting family, bringing dessert to a party, or enjoying a quiet afternoon of holiday baking, these sparkling cranberries are such a lovely way to add a little Christmas magic.

Happy baking and Merry Christmas from all of us at Interior Delights!
